BEOWULF: A Parallel Workstation for Scientific Computation
نویسندگان
چکیده
{ Network-of-Workstations technology is applied to the challenge of implementing very high performance workstations for Earth and space science applications. The Beowulf parallel workstation employs 16 PC-based processing modules integrated with multiple Ether-net networks. Large disk capacity and high disk to memory bandwidth is achieved through the use of a hard disk and controller for each processing module supporting up to 16 way concurrent accesses. The paper presents results from a series of experiments that measure the scaling characteristics of Beowulf in terms of communication bandwidth, le transfer rates, and processing performance. The evaluation includes a computational uid dynamics code and an N-body gravitational simulation program. It is shown that the Beowulf architecture provides a new operating point in performance to cost for high performance workstations, especially for le transfers under favorable conditions.

متن کاملDeveloping High-Level Irregularly-Parallel Programs for Multiple Architectures
The variety of parallel architectures nowadays available implies that models for parallel software development should deliver acceptable performance on a range of architectures with minimal development effort. One approach is to use languages with very high level, and substantially architecture-independent, specification of parallel coordination. This paper presents a novel profiling-based meth...

The development of efficient techniques for transforming massive volumes of remotely sensed hyperspectral data into scientific understanding is critical for space-based Earth science and planetary exploration. Although most available parallel processing strategies for information extraction and mining from hyperspectral imagery assume homogeneity in the underlying computing platform, heterogene...
متن کاملMaking A Beowulf Cluster
The Scientific Computation Research Center (SCOREC) was established jointly by the Schools of Engineering and Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. SCOREC models real world physical reactions by simulating them on computers. The numerical solution of these models often requires discretizations with a number of unknowns approaching one billion. Problems of this scale can only be solved on...
